Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like typical biological terror, but within Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story commences when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.
