The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
